(1) Types of coating tools

According to different coating methods, coating tools can be divided into chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coating tools and physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating tools. Coated carbide cutting tools are generally used by chemical vapor deposition, and the deposition temperature is about 1000℃. The coated high-speed steel tool generally adopts physical vapor deposition method, and the deposition temperature is about 500℃.

According to the different coating tool base material, coating tools can be divided into carbide coated tools, high-speed steel coated tools, and coated tools on ceramics and superhard materials (diamond and cubic boron nitride).

According to the nature of the coating material, the coating tool can be divided into two categories, namely, "hard" coating tool and "soft" coating tool. The main goal of the "hard" coating tool is high hardness and wear resistance, and its main advantages are high hardness and good wear resistance, typically TiC and TiN coatings. The goal of the "soft" coating tool is to pursue a low coefficient of friction, also known as a self-lubricating tool, which has a very low coefficient of friction with the workpiece material, only about 0.1, which can reduce bonding, reduce friction, reduce cutting force and cutting temperature.

Nanoeoating tools have recently been developed. This coating tool can be used in different combinations of various coating materials (such as metal/metal, metal/ceramic, ceramic/ceramic, etc.) to meet different functional and performance requirements. The rational design of nano-coating can make the tool material have excellent anti-friction and anti-wear function and self-lubricating property, which is suitable for high-speed dry cutting.

(2) Characteristics of coating tools

The performance characteristics of the coating tool are as follows.


① Good mechanical and cutting properties: the coating tool combines the excellent properties of the substrate material and the coating material, which not only maintains the good toughness and high strength of the substrate, but also has the high hardness, high wear resistance and low friction coefficient of the coating. Therefore, the cutting speed of the coated tool can be increased by more than 2 times than that of the uncoated tool, and a higher feed rate is allowed. The life of coated tools is also improved.


Strong versatility: the coating tool has wide versatility, the processing range is significantly expanded, and a coated tool can replace several kinds of non-coated tools.

③ Coating thickness: With the increase of coating thickness, the tool life will also increase, but when the coating thickness reaches saturation, the tool life is no longer significantly increased. When the coating is too thick, it is easy to cause peeling; When the coating is too thin, the wear resistance is poor.

④ Regrindability: poor regrindability of coating blades, complex coating equipment, high process requirements, and long coating time.

⑤ Coating materials: different coating materials of the tool, cutting performance is not the same. For example, when cutting at low speed, TiC coating has an advantage; TiN is more suitable for high speed cutting.

(3) Application of coating tools

Coated tools have great potential in the field of CNC machining and will be the most important tool varieties in the field of CNC machining in the future. The coating technology has been applied to end milling cutter, reamer, drill, compound hole machining tool, gear hob, gear shaper cutter, shaving cutter, forming broach and all kinds of machine clamp rotatable blades to meet the needs of high-speed machining of various steel and cast iron, heat-resistant alloy and non-ferrous metal materials.

The application case proves that the correct analysis and design of nc turning process is helpful to improve parts quality and production efficiency.

How many years has your company had production experience?                                     Our company was established in 2000 and was reorganized in 2007 as NeK CNC tools Co.,Ltd.
